Grand Beginnings Contest
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
Every romance writer is familiar with this opening from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and hopes the beginning of her own story is as compelling. The Northwest Indiana Chapter of RWA © would like to receive the grand beginnings of your unpublished romance. The contest is open to unpublished RWA members as well as to those who have not been published within the past three years. Membership in the RWA is NOT a prerequisite.
The top five finalists will be ranked by 2006 Golden Heart finalist, published author and Wild Rose Press editor, Michelle Witvliet.
In addition, the top four finalists will be listed in the Romance Writer's Report.
To Submit by E-mail
- Email entry formatted as follows in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or RTF. Submission must be double-spaced, and in standard manuscript form (one inch margins all around , Courier, Courier New 12 or Times New Roman 14 font) with the title in the upper left-hand corner and the page numbers in the right-hand corner. Please include the sub-genre in the header. ENTRANT'S NAME DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE FILE ATTACHMENT.
- List your name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and the title of your submission in the body of your email, then attach your submission file.
- Your online entry will be judged by two experienced, trained critiquers and returned to you via email with score sheets and judges comments inserted in the file.
- If you are a finalist, your entry will be printed and sent to an industry professional to be judged and ranked. This will be returned to you via standard mail along with the final judges scores and comments.
- $20.00 US (Twenty dollars in US currency) for the first entry. Subsequent entries by the same author may be submitted for an additional fee of $10.00 (ten dollars) each. For writers submitting from outside the United States, add another $5.00 (five dollars). Return postage, if required, is included in these fees. Paypal Accepted. Checks/money orders payable in $US to: RWA/NWIN Chapter 89.
- ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEBRUARY 14. Any submissions received after that date will be deleted. ONLY THE FIRST 100 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. You will receive a confirmation email when your entry AND payment have been received.
- Contest winners will be notified on or before April 30th.

I certify that I'm the author of the contest entry/entries. I have read the requirements and understand that any non-compliance will result in my entry being disqualified and the fee(s) forfeited. I/we agree to hold harmless RWA © and the Northwest Indiana Romance Writers Chapter 89, their officers, members, all contest judges, personnel and volunteers, heirs and assigns et. al in any and all disputes arising from my/our entry(s) in the Grand Beginning Contest.
