Grand Beginnings Contest
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
Every romance writer is familiar with this opening from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and hopes the beginning of her own story is as compelling. The Northwest Indiana Chapter of RWA © would like to receive the grand beginnings of your unpublished romance. The contest is open to unpublished RWA members as well as to those who have not been published within the past three years. Membership in the RWA is NOT a prerequisite.
The top five finalists will be ranked by 2006 Golden Heart finalist, published author and Wild Rose Press editor, Michelle Witvliet.
In addition, the top four finalists will be listed in the Romance Writer's Report.
To Submit by Standard Mail
- FOUR (4) copies of the first 5 pages of a manuscript. Two (2) copies will be judged by experienced critiquers, one (1) copy is reserved for discrepancy judging, and one (1) copy for final judging. Submission must be double-spaced, and in standard manuscript form (one inch margins all around , Courier, Courier New 12 or Times New Roman 14 font) with the title in the upper left-hand corner and the page numbers in the right-hand corner. Please include the sub-genre in the header. ENTRANT'S NAME APPEARS ON THE COVER SHEET ONLY.
- Cover sheet listing your name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and the title of your submission.
- One manuscript-size SAE (no postage) for the return of your submission and score sheets. If you are a finalist, one of the four copies will be sent to an industry professional to be judged and ranked.
- $20.00 US (Twenty dollars in US currency) for the first entry. Subsequent entries by the same author may be submitted for an additional fee of $10.00 (ten dollars) each. For writers submitting from outside the United States, add another $5.00 (five dollars). Return postage is included in these fees. Paypal Accepted. Checks/money orders payable in $US to: RWA/NWIN Chapter 89.
- ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY FEBRUARY 14. Any submissions postmarked after that date will be returned.ONLY THE FIRST 100 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. No entries requiring a signature will be accepted. If you need confirmation of delivery, include an email address.
- Contest winners will be notified on or before April 30th.
